Early 19thc Japanese Tansu

A beautiful full size Japanese Tansu from the early 1800's. A lovely rich colour and finish. Totally practical and very collectable. 5 drawers and a cabinet that opens to 2 small compartments. The intricate hardware is cast iron. The pinewood a has rich red-brown finish. The overall organic wear to the wood which really gives the chest its warmth and sense of history.

Created in Japan during the Meiji period, this tansu chest features a linear silhouette. The façade showcases 5 drawers (3 large ones followed by a medium and small sized one), all fitted with iron hardware. Presenting lateral handles allowing the piece to be moved more easily.

In good condition with natural wear to the wood and iron that's consistent with the chest's age and use.
